major league baseball held its opening day yesterday, as the hated new york yankees were spanked by the tampa bay devil rays (full disclosure: i am a rocco baldelli fan).
but the wierd thing about this year's opening day was that it was held in tokyo dome in japan. what the hell is america's pastime doing holding opening day in a foriegn country? it doesn't make any sense.
however, if it had to be held in a foreign city, why not have it in baghdad? that way we can show those iraqis all the great things a free, democratic society has to offer.
then you could sit saddam in a nice laz-e-boy, hand him a six-pack and a bag of doritos in his little jail cell, with a t.v tuned to espn and say "hey man! do you get it, yet? you could have had all this if you weren't such a douche."
i wonder if steinbrenner would have made the trip.

reporters, editors, photographers and ad salesmen of baghdad's al hawza, a radical shiite weekly newspaper, went to work yesterday to see the u.s military had put a big ol' padlock on the front door, effectively shutting the newspaper down.
l. paul bremmer said the paper had been publishing anti-american lies and inciting violence through those rumors, and had to be shut down. according to a law pased by the occupying powers, all media need to be licensed by the occupying powers, which can also revoke that license - as the case with al hawza
now excuse, me, but doesn't democracy need a free and independent media in order for it to work? i mean, isn't this the kind of crap the commies, or perhaps even religious zealots, try to pull?
so what if al hawza was publishing lies and rumors. who said you have to have the facts right to be a part of a free and independent media? isn't that right ann coulter? rush?
it is infuriating to think u.s. officials expect the iraqi people to grasp onto democracy when they continually take away the institutions they need most in order to make it work.
a big thumbs own this week to the u.s occupying powers of iraq.

i was driving to work the other day, listening to the radio, when the dj got all giddy over the new who song they had ready to play. out of sheer morbid curiosity, i stayed tuned.
come to find out, the song's called "real good lookin' boy," which gave me pause.
given petter-ass pete's pedophilia problems of late, it wondered if it was wise for the who to call their first release in like 58 years, "real good lookin' boy?"
now i know how pete would respond. probably something like, "it's my song. not your song. and i'll release when i want to." that's fine, but it is really bright? i don't think so. i mean jesus, pete, you've been in the entertainment business long enough to know better.
oh, and then the worst part came. they played the song. oooh! brutal!
i really need to get a creedence tape for the car.

Get up, get, get, get down, 9-11's a Joke! So says the Comedian in Chief, in yet another display of un-presidential behavior. ARRRGH!!!!!!
Bush's days are numbered...Richard Clarke's J'ACCUSE! testimony to the 9-11 commission yesterday threw a gallon of napalm on the whole brood of vipers in DC, from the White House's Potemkin photo-op foreign policy to the US Congress' feckless inaction while chasing Bill Clinton's Weapons of Mass Erection during the late 90s.
As with Watergate (ironic that Rummy and Cheney are holdovers, huh?), it's possible that the coverup may be worse than the actual crime...but what crime are we talking about here? At the VERY LEAST, the Busheviks are guilty of monumental incompetence, inexcusable ignorance, and gross stupidity. What the hell kind of National Security Advisor will go first to idiot manchild Sean Hannity to plead the government's case instead of testifying under oath at the committee, like her administrative forebear Sandy Berger did? What kind of Vice President goes to Reich Limbaugh to rebut the challenges to his government's integrity?
Blogger Joshua Marshall (Talking Points Memo) has another really good point, too...if NSA can suddenly "de-classify" the identities of administration sources for the behest of FOX news (with the purpose of discrediting RC), why can't they be likewise compelled to disclose the sources of the leak that blew the cover of CIA Agent Valerie Plame? Treason, anyone?
Karen Kwiatkowski...Paul O'Neill...Clarke...why is it that it's Bush's own party that's leading the charge on the Bastille, and not the putative Loyal Opposition? In the course of one afternoon Rubin and Clarke--both Republicans--did more to inform Americans of the ugly truth behind 9-11 than 18 months of "let's play nice with the class bully" tactics from Tom Daschle.
November is now less than 8 months away. The Democrats need to break out the corpse paint and drink blood from Lyndon Johnson's skull.

Hello, all, and un-happy Attaq Iraq anniversary. One year has passed, and the world is on fucking fire. For those who persist in giving Bush the benefit of the doubt on fighting international terrorism, consider this:
In order to invade Iraq, Bush pulled the US military completely out of Saudi Arabia...something Osama bin Laden has wanted;
By invading Iraq, we have toppled the only secular government in the Middle East, and sown the seeds of sectarian strife...yet another "Mission Accomplished" for Osama's and al Qaida.
Who is serving whom here?

How much more of this Economic Recovery can we take? Check it out...Fed Chief Alan Greenspan wants to raise Social Security taxes.
WHAT???? Haven't we been hearing a constant mechanical drone from the White Castle (formerly the White House...it's more befitting the neofeudalism going on these days) that the Democrats are EVIL because they want to raise taxes?
I guess the only taxes that will be raised under Bush are the regressive ones--the ones that affect the poor yobs and slobs the most. Imagine that...raising taxes on the lower and middle classes, so we can give the One Percenters a TAX CUT!!!!! If you're not ready to set Lincoln Park on fire yet, you're not paying attention.
Here's another reason why GREENSCAM probably wants to hike FICA...$4 billion are MISSING from Iraqi reconstruction funds. $4,000,000,000! That's our tax dollars at work, doing...what? Probably ensuring that no Bush for the next ten generations will have to work a day in his effete life. Happy Invasion Anniversary Iraq...you're screwed. Love, Dick Cheney.
The outrage keeps piling up, too...as it turns out, the WC deliberately withheld cost estimates on that shit sandwich of a Medicare prescription drug plan. Instead of the already-formidable price tag of $395 bn, the plan was estimated at well over $500 billion, a detail that surely would have sunk the plan in a Congress facing pressure to reduce spending. Bush knew this--that's why he threatened to fire a CMMS actuary if he informed lawmakers of these figures.
John Kerry's right about one thing--the Bush Crime Family is the biggest coven of thieves, liars, charlatans, and shameless mountebanks the Western Hemisphere has ever witnessed. These evil criminal motherfuckers have no soul...and if I get my way, no job come November.

I heard a news report on the radio this morning regarding a 400 percent rent increase at the Double Door that may effectively shut down the club. I tried finding the related story in the Sun-Times but to no avail. Has anyone else heard about this?
